A conversion of two existing buildings into a new learning hub. The 100,000 sf existing K-Mart building, with partially reinforced masonry walls and plywood diaphragm, was seismically retrofitted by application of shotcrete to comply with Title 24 seismic requirements. The auxiliary building was retrofitted with new steel moment frames to augment the existing shear wall.
The challenge of this project was the extensive testing and field investigation required to verify and document the existing structure, establishing test parameters, and developing the quality control program for the shotcrete application. DSA was the approving regulatory agency.
